What’s your lucky number? For minimalist postpunk group Optic Sink, it might be three. This Memphis band started in 2018 as the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Natalie Hoffmann, during a hiatus by her main group, noise-punk outfit Nots. It’s since grown into a trio that includes guitarist and bassist Keith Cooper (Jack Oblivian & the Sheiks) and percussionist and synth player Ben Bauermeister (Magic Kids). Optic Sink emerged from a painful period for Hoffmann—in 2018 and 2019, two people close to her died—and writing the band’s 2020 self-titled debut album helped her process her grief and anxiety and break a creative block.
