Witch’s Mirror, a doom/sludge band from Washington D.C. Earlier this month they released their self-titled debut EP and it’s streaming right now on Bandcamp.
Opening track “Control” demonstrates not only a devastating, crushing doom sound, but also some really beautiful, quieter, melodic moments. The powerful vocal performance of Kristin Eliason elevates this track beyond the typical doom sludge sound, making something unique yet familiar. Then “Cherry Moon” opens on this gorgeous, clean guitar and raw, grungy vocal and builds a perfect atmosphere before the heavy guitars come crashing in, demonstrating a profound balance between melody and power. “Solstice” is a dark and slow, grungy sludge track that becomes a perfect slow burn build-up to Eliason hitting one spectacular clean high note and then coming back down into a death metal growl. Finally, “Triage” is a slow and sultry track at times, building up to another vocal stunner as Eliason shows a breathtakingly dynamic range, knowing when to be restrained and when to just let go. This whole EP has a wonderfully spooky, witchy feel to it. It’s an EP that makes something new out of the doom/sludge genre, something with a truly unique beauty.
